It was most popularly used in 8-bit / 16-bit video games (nintendo, super nintendo) where you'd see the same enemy over and over, but they'd recolor it to make it "different". Was most prominent in beat-em-ups where early enemies looked normal, then later enemies looked greenish or reddish or whatever to denote they were more powerful.
